Every behavior has three parts. Once you can recognize all three, you can change any one of them.
The foundation guide that makes every other parenting strategy actually work — built on 30+ years of Applied Behavior Analysis with real families.
The problem most parents don't see
Your child melts down. You react. You try a strategy. The strategy works for three days, then stops. You try a different one. Same thing. You read another book, listen to another podcast, screenshot another Instagram reel. Nothing sticks for long.
Here's the part most strategies skip: you're working on the middle of the equation. The behavior itself. The B. But every behavior also has an A (what happened right before) and a C (what happened right after). If you don't know what those are, you're guessing at one piece of a three-piece puzzle.
Behaviors are learned. That's the most hopeful sentence in this whole guide. Because anything that's been learned can be unlearned, and a better one taught in its place. But not until you can see all three parts.
What you'll walk away with
A new way of seeing your child's behavior. Not a script for one specific situation. A framework that works on any behavior, with any child, at any age.
Specifically:
• How to spot the antecedents (the A) that are setting your child up to fail, and what to do instead
• How to define a behavior (the B) clearly enough that you can actually change it ("misbehaving" doesn't count)
• How to recognize the consequences (the C) you're delivering that are accidentally making things worse
• The four functions of behavior — what your child's behavior is actually doing for them
• A real ABC Observation Worksheet to find the patterns underneath what looks random
• A three-part Behavior Plan Blueprint you can apply to any behavior you want to change
What's inside
Part One: A is for Antecedent
What an antecedent is. The setup work that decides whether the behavior happens at all. The No-Go Zone of antecedents to avoid, and the Proactive Playbook of eight strategies that prevent problems before they start. This is behavioral chess. Thinking one move ahead.
Part Two: B is for Behavior
How to define a behavior so clearly that you can actually measure it. The "stranger test" for whether your definition is tight enough. Why "misbehaving" isn't a behavior, and what to use instead.
Part Three: C is for Consequence
The two kinds of consequences and what each one teaches. Inadvertent reinforcement: the trap where you're accidentally rewarding the exact behavior you're trying to stop. The No-Go Zone of consequences that backfire, and the Oh Yes Please list of consequences that build behavior.
Part Four: The Four Functions of Behavior
Access. Attention. Escape. Sensory. The four reasons behavior happens, and why the function decides whether your plan works. Plus, when (and when not) to teach a replacement skill.
Part Five: Putting It All Together
Your Behavior Plan Blueprint. A worked example. A fill-in action plan for the specific behavior you're working on.
Plus: ABC Observation Worksheet & Parent Cheat Sheet
A printable worksheet to track patterns over several days. A one-page cheat sheet to stick on the fridge with the antecedent strategies, consequence strategies, four functions, and three in-the-moment questions to ask yourself.
Who this is for
Parents of toddlers, preschoolers, and early elementary children who are tired of trying strategies that work for three days and stop working. Especially parents who want to understand why their child is doing what they're doing instead of just reacting to it. This is the foundation. Everything else in the Parent Behavior Guides series points back here.
The rest of the series
Once you've got the ABC framework down, my Reinforcement guide goes deep on the C (the consequences that actually build behavior). My Earlier, The Easier guide focuses on antecedent strategies for getting young children to listen the first time. My Unraveling the Mystery guide takes the four functions and walks you through how to figure out which one is driving your child's specific behavior. My Token Economy guide explains what to build once you understand all of the above.
